I’ve always been a creative type, ever since pre-school. I’ll never forget Mrs. Carlson’s vivid imagination in 1st grade, where she instilled in us a colorful fascination each of our classroom pursuits. She taught us to reach high, literally, and successfully climb the full-size multi-color classroom tree-fort.
Many years later, a dear instructor, Ms. Annabel J. Wharton (Duke), taught me the art and craft of writing concisely, yet poignantly. I’m forever indebted to her linguistic prowess, but am more indebted to her for introducing me to Modern Architecture.
Over these years, I’ve had the fortune of learning from and working with a myriad of creative types. Michael Oatman (RPI) taught us to draw our facial silhouettes, in the mirror, on many countless attempts. We were then instructed to draw them again, using our non-dominant hand. Finally, we drew both, on top of each other, at the same time. The result is mesmerizing.
Many other architecture faculty were highly inspiring as well, in all of their broad array of creative pursuits. Fareh Garba particularly mesmerized me with her “Design Explorations” course, and I still am in awe of these beautiful graphics. Thank you to Fareh Garba, Maria Paz Guitierrez, Anna Dyson, and Ken Warriner, all for having patience and confidence in me, and for guiding each of my RPI projects to rewarding results.
There are so many architects, designers, artists, coworkers, friends, colleagues, all of whom have been so inspiring all these years. Thank you for that inspiration. Thank you most to my parents for exposing me to Art & History Museums and Architecture & the Arts. I am forever indebted to them for enriching me as a creative person.
